The article “Join the Flock” is based on using twitter to build a PLN. According to this article a PLN is a community of individuals around the world who are learning together. Developing a PLN on twitter takes commitment because it is time consuming. It is almost like getting to know someone and building a relationship with them. In this article 7 steps are discussed about the process of building a PLN on twitter:
Set up your account. After signing up for a free account on Twitter, you will be able to post a picture and write about yourself and/or interests in the bio It is important that you have a photo because that image makes you more real to your PLN.
Learn to follow. Following someone on twitter is easy. It requires nothing more than clicking the Follow button. Twitter then notifies that person that you are following him or her. After the person checks out your profile they can choose to follow you back or not.
Tap into great lists. A good way to find people to follow is to check out the lists that other people create.
Watch and listen. On twitter you do not need to participate in conversations if you don’t want to. You can spend hours and days lurking without tweeting anything. From lurking you can see conversations from other people and obtain information (links, blogs) that might be useful.
Give generously. The next step is to move beyond simply taking from the Twitter stream and start retweeting. From retweeting you earn more followers because you will have made your- self visible to the PLN world. When you retweet someone’s post, it shows up in the stream of the person who posted it.
Expose yourself. This is when you share your ideas with the people who are now following you. Begin by tweeting the links to tools and sites that you like or find very informative and/or useful.
Tag your tweet. Using a hashtag in your tweet will give it even more exposure. A hashtag will add it to the streams of the educators who follow that hashtag. Some of the education hashtags I find useful are #teachers, #educators, #web20, and #pln. When you add a hashtag to your post, more people will see what you are sharing.

Educators are invited to become PLN members. The purpose of having a PLN was focused on. It was recognized that one cannot always depend on himself/herself for information but networking can be very important. The answer to such an undertaking is becoming a member of tweeter. In such a venture one must be mindful that commitment is a main factor in creating and maintaining a social community using the following steps:
Set up an account-this free account set up includes a photo and bio of yourself. This makes it easier for people to decide whether or not they want to follow you, based on your self-description and interests.
Learnto follow- search through members for those who seem interested to you by reading their bio. Posted information of whoever you select to follow will be visible to you on your twitter stream.
Tap into great lists- it is ok to look for followers from other people’s list.
Watch and listen- on twitter, one may listen and observe without directly participating in activities. It is through this that you may gain information for your specific requirements.
Give generously- retweeting someone’s post is a good way of gaining followers.
Expose yourself- now is the time where your share your ideas and information. Remember it’s a network.
Tag your tweet- use a hashtag (#) followed by a word or phrase to form more exposure to specific fields. In this case more people will be able to follow up on what you are sharing. They will also have access of what others have shared on the topic.
